Ghana Visa on Arrival—What You Need to Know

by Ann Maclean

Understanding visa requirements is essential when planning a trip to Ghana. Entry conditions depend on the traveler’s nationality, the purpose of the visit, and the intended duration of stay. One of the most convenient options available is the Ghana visa on arrival.

Visa-Exempt Countries
Citizens of several African and Caribbean countries are allowed visa-free entry into Ghana for up to 90 days. These include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Others, like Mauritius and Trinidad & Tobago, are allowed up to 60 days.

Special Passport Holders

Holders of diplomatic, official, or service passports from countries such as Brazil, China, Cuba, Germany, Equatorial Guinea, and Iran are also exempt from visa requirements. Additionally, officials with passports from Regional Economic Communities in Africa, the African Economic Community, or the United Nations and affiliated organizations like the African Development Bank do not require a visa.

Ghana Visa on Arrival Policy

Since July 1, 2016, citizens of African Union member states (excluding Morocco) who are not visa-exempt can obtain a Ghana visa on arrival for a stay of up to 30 days. If the traveler meets specific conditions, such as traveling on short notice from a country without a Ghanaian embassy, a Ghana visa on arrival can be issued with pre-approved immigration clearance.

Transit Visas
Transit passengers who remain in the airside area and do not go through border control are exempt from visa requirements.

Embassy and Online Visas
Nationals of countries not covered by the visa exemption or on-arrival policy must obtain their Ghana visa through a Ghanaian embassy or, in some cases, online. The most common types of visas include:

  • Visitor/Tourist Visa
  • Business Visa
  • Study Visa
  • Employment Visa
  • Transit Visa

It is recommended that visas be applied for through the nearest Ghanaian diplomatic mission. The process usually includes submitting the completed application form along with supporting documents based on the type of visa requested.

Whether you’re traveling for business, study, or tourism, the Ghana visa on arrival option simplifies short-term visits for eligible travelers. It’s important to check eligibility in advance to avoid complications.
