The Ghana Diaspora Advocacy and Resource Foundation (GDAAR) proudly joined the Ghana Education Service (GES) in celebrating the 2024 International Day of Girls in ICT with a special event emphasizing the theme of “Leadership.” Held at the Science Education Unit (National STEM Resource Unit) of the GES, the celebration empowered 150 female students from the Greater Accra Region.
GDAAR aligns with the GES’s commitment to technology education, recognizing the vital role tech plays in diverse careers. Mrs. Olivia Serwaa Opare, Director in charge of STEM Education at the GES, stated, “Girls’ leadership in ICT and STEM is now more crucial than ever.” GDAAR believes that providing girls with leadership training, career development opportunities, and scholarships in STEM fields paves the way for a more just and equitable world.
“We must ensure girls have equal opportunities to learn digital skills and technology fundamentals from an early age,” emphasized Mrs. Gifty Sekyi-Bremansu, Director of Guidance and Counselling Unit of the GES. GDAAR champions closing the gender gap in STEM sectors by advocating for quality education accessible to all young women.
Mrs. Gifty Amega, Director of Girls Education at GES, reinforced that encouraging girls’ interest in STEM and ICT creates a future filled with female tech leaders. GDAAR actively seeks to inspire and provide resources for girls to excel in these fields.
In addition to GES representatives, the event featured insightful speakers like Mr. Abel Ohene Acquaye, CEO of Ghana Olympiad Academy, who stressed the importance of girls leading by example within STEM fields. Mr. Emmanual Offei Kwakye of MTN Ghana highlighted the vast job opportunities for women in ICT, encouraging girls to pursue careers such as data analysis and software engineering.
Hands-on activities like a quiz and a robotics competition, led by Mr. Kwasi Abankwa Anokye, National STEM Coordinator in charge of ICT/Computing at GES, engaged the girls and built their technical skills.
