Green Ghana Day: A Call for Sustainability and Improved Tree Care.

The GDAAR Foundation applauds the launch of yesterday’s Green Ghana Day, a nationwide initiative aimed at restoring Ghana’s forest cover. We acknowledge the importance of tree planting in combating climate change, protecting biodiversity, and enhancing our overall well-being.

However, we believe the current approach to Green Ghana Day requires a critical reassessment to ensure long-term sustainability and meaningful impact.

Challenges and Recommendations

While well-intentioned, past tree planting efforts in Ghana have often faced challenges, including:

Tree Selection: The choice of tree species often lacks consideration for economic value to communities and suitability for local climates. This leads to low survival rates and decreased community engagement. We recommend planting trees offering economic benefits alongside native species adapted to the specific region.
Post-planting Care: Newly planted trees frequently lack adequate care like watering, protection from bush fires, and pest and disease control. The government and communities must collaborate on sustainable tree care programs, ensuring resources are available for maintenance.
Program Organization: A more organized approach, with clear guidelines on where to plant, how to maintain the trees, and who is responsible for their care, would greatly improve efficiency and impact.

The VRA Model: A Path to Success

The GDAAR Foundation urges the government to consider adopting the successful model of the Volta River Authority (VRA). The VRA’s tree planting program along the Volta Lake demonstrates long-term success due to its emphasis on species selection, community involvement, and consistent tree care.

Asante People Reclaims More Than Artefacts in Sagrenti War Reparations.

Kumasi, Ghana – February 8, 2024: The impending return of looted Asante artefacts from the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum marks a significant step in addressing colonial injustices. However, recent insights presented by Professor Tom McCaskie, Head of the Centre of West African Studies at Birmingham University, highlight the broader scope of losses incurred during the 1874 Sagrenti War. Beyond gold artefacts, the Asante People demands the acknowledgement and potential restitution of stolen gold dust, representing a crucial chapter in their history and with far-reaching implications for the global African diaspora.

Lost Treasures, Untold Stories: Professor McCaskie reveals the vast wealth accumulated by Asantehene Kofi Karikari’s predecessor, Nana Kwaku Dua I, including over 400,000 ounces of gold dust valued at 1.2 million pounds in 1867 (over £2 billion today). This treasure, meticulously stored across Kumasi, Aburaso, and Breman, vanished amidst the war’s devastation. Notably, this “private loot” finds no mention in historical narratives, underscoring the hidden costs of colonial plunder.

The Citi FM/Citi TV Made in Ghana Fair ended on a high note on Sunday, August 27, 2023, with both vendors and patrons expressing gratitude to the organizers for creating such a rare opportunity to showcase and purchase locally manufactured products and services.

The two-day fair, which was held at the forecourt of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, attracted thousands of people from all walks of life. It featured a wide variety of products and services, including food, clothing, furniture, electronics, and handicrafts.

Many of the vendors at the fair said that they were very happy with the turnout and the sales they had made. They expressed optimism that the fair would help to boost the visibility and demand for locally manufactured products.

Ghana Diaspora Dialogue 2023 to Address Reintegration Challenges

Accra, Ghana – A non-profit organization, Ghana Diaspora Advocacy And Resource (GDAR ) Foundation, is hosting the Ghana Diaspora Dialogue 2023 on October 17, 2023, at the W.E.B. DuBois Centre in Accra. The event will bring together Ghanaians living in the diaspora ,diasporas living in Ghana and those who are considering returning to Ghana to discuss the challenges of reintegration and to find solutions.

GDAAR was founded in 2018 with the mission of facilitating the re-integration process for individuals, acknowledging the challenges and finding solutions. We strive to overcome housing, socio-cultural, spiritual, economic, and legal barriers, enabling everyone to achieve personal and business advancement in Ghana. By offering essential tools and resources, we empower individuals to successfully transition into Ghana society. Our ultimate mission is to make re-integration seamless and appealing for our members.

GDAAR currently has 2700 registered members and expects 200-250 in attendance at the Ghana Diaspora Dialogue Event. The event will feature a panel discussion with experts on reintegration, as well as breakout sessions on specific topics such as housing, education, and business. There will also be an opportunity for networking and socializing.

“We want to create a safe space for Ghanaians in the diaspora and diasporas in Ghana to share their experiences and to get the support they need to reintegrate into Ghana,” said GDAAR founder and Executive Director, Joseph Kwame Okyere Darko Bekoe . “We also want to connect them with resources and opportunities that will help them achieve their goals.”

The Ghana Diaspora Dialogue 2023 is a valuable opportunity for Ghanaians in the diaspora and diasporas in Ghana to learn from each other and to get the support they need to make a smooth transition back to Ghana.
